Animism in Design, Philip Fimmano - Trendunion

Humans and animals are all sentient beings, connected in a natural way. Now, animism comes the fore in contemporary culture and design, revisiting the earliest and most primitive rituals through the veneration of the river and the moon as well as seedpods, animals, feathers, shells, twigs and the humble pebble. The beauty of a handmade spoon, the strength of a wrought iron skillet, the fragrance of a candle and the tactility of a kitchen textile – are all reconsidered and singled out, so as to give them a new life essence in their own right. Redefining sustainable design and lifestyle objects that have a soul.

Philip Fimmano is a contemporary lifestyle specialist working at Trend Union and traveling the world as part of his research. He is also a Partner at the forecasting studio Edelkoort Inc., active in industries as varied as interiors, fashion, food and architecture, providing insight and strategic studies for various multinationals. In 2011, Philip co-founded Talking Textiles with Lidewij Edelkoort, an ongoing initiative to promote awareness and innovation in textiles through touring exhibitions, publications and educational programmes; including New York Textile Month, a citywide festival celebrating textiles each September. Philip currently mentors design students at Polimoda in Florence and Washington University, St Louis. He is also a curator of design exhibitions for international museums, including Tokyo’s 21_21 Design Sight, Artipelag in Sweden and Design Museum Holon.
